Description
Avista RoClean P111 organic reverse osmosis membrane cleaner with biofouling
RoClean™ P111 is a highly effective powdered cleaner designed specifically for reverse osmosis (RO) systems facing severe biofouling challenges, including polysaccharides, severe colloidal fouling and moderate humic and fulvic acid contamination. This high pH, buffered product is ideal for potable water, seawater, brackish water or wastewater applications where the use of a powdered cleaner is preferred. Certified by NSF International under NSF/ANSI Standard 60 for offline use in drinking water systems, RoClean P111 ensures not only effective cleaning but also safety in its application for water treatment.
Key benefits of the RoClean P111 cleaner
- Specialized formula: RoClean P111 combines a specialized blend of proprietary buffers, surfactants and chelators designed to effectively dissolve organic contaminants and disperse colloidal particles.
- High buffering power: Its ability to resist changes in pH during the cleaning process ensures constant effectiveness, regardless of the initial water conditions.
- Universal compatibility with polyamide membranes: Compatible with polyamide membranes from all manufacturers, RoClean P111 offers a versatile solution for a wide range of reverse osmosis systems.
- NSF/ANSI Standard 60 Certification: Ensures that RoClean P111 can be safely used in drinking water treatment applications, which not all membrane cleaners can claim.
- Combined use with other Avista™ cleaners: Can be used in conjunction with other Avista™ cleaners for more thorough and targeted cleaning according to system needs.

Cleaning
The following is an overview of the cleaning method with RoClean P111. For more information, please refer to our technical bulletin “Cleaning of Spiral Wound Membrane Elements”.
- Fill the cleaning tank to the desired volume with RO permeate or deionized water. Heat the solution to the maximum allowable temperature (according to the membrane manufacturer’s instructions), which will significantly increase the cleaning efficiency. Add RoClean P111 in sufficient quantity to form a 2% solution by weight if the soiling is moderate to severe, or a 1% solution by weight if the soiling is light. Recirculate the solution through the cleaning tank to ensure homogeneous mixing.
- Run the cleaning solution through each stage of the RO system individually, for a minimum of 60 minutes and at the flow rate recommended by the membrane manufacturer. If that rate is not known, follow the directions provided:
Element diameter (Inches)Diaphragm bag flow (GPM m3/h)410 (2.4)840 (9.0) - If the membranes are heavily fouled and the recirculated cleaning solution becomes dark or cloudy, remove up to 15% of the solution volume. Heavily soiled items may also benefit from a soaking period (up to 8 hours).
- Control the pH of the solution during the cleaning process. If the pH remains within the desired range and the solution does not become cloudy, it can be used to clean the following stages. In the unlikely event that the pH decreases, prepare a new mixture and repeat steps 1 to 4.
- Once cleaning is complete, rinse the membranes by passing RO permeate through each vessel under pressure. After that, the system is ready for operation again.
