Description
Avista RoClean L211 Organic Fouling Membrane Cleaner
RoClean™ L211 is a multi-component, high pH buffered, low foaming liquid cleaner specifically designed to remove colloidal silica, clay, organic color and biofilms from reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. This product is successfully applied in systems operating with seawater, brackish water or wastewater where a liquid cleaner is preferred. RoClean L211 is a highly effective contaminant remover, yet gentle enough to be applied daily if needed. NSF approved and/or EN12124 compliant for drinking water treatment chemicals, RoClean L211 represents a safe and effective cleaning solution for a wide range of applications.
Key benefits of the RoClean L211 cleaner:
- Unique formula: RoClean L211 combines dispersants, low foaming surfactants and chelators to effectively dissolve organic contaminants and dispersed colloidal particles.
- High buffering power: Its highly buffered composition allows it to resist changes in pH during the cleaning process, ensuring constant effectiveness throughout the entire process.
- Universal membrane compatibility: Compatible with polyamide membranes from all membrane manufacturers, RoClean L211 is versatile for a wide range of reverse osmosis systems.
- Combined use with other Avista™ cleaners: Can be used in conjunction with other Avista cleaners for more thorough and targeted cleaning according to system needs.
Applications and use of the RoClean L211:
RoClean L211 is ideal for reverse osmosis systems that face challenges with colloidal silica, clay, organic color and biofilms common in seawater, brackish water and wastewater treatment. Its liquid formulation makes it preferable in situations where the handling and application of liquid cleaners is more convenient or effective.

What is the proper procedure for using RoClean L211?
Instructions for use:
Cleaning of membrane elements
- Fill the cleaning tank to the desired volume with reverse osmosis permeate or deionized water. Heat the solution to the maximum allowable temperature (according to the membrane manufacturer’s guidelines), as this will significantly increase the cleaning efficiency. Add RoClean L211 in sufficient quantity to obtain a 2% solution by weight if the fouling is moderate to severe, or a 1% solution by weight if the fouling is light. Recirculate the solution through the cleaning tank to ensure proper mixing.
- Run the cleaning solution through each stage of the RO system individually for a minimum of 60 minutes at the membrane manufacturer’s recommended flow rate. If this speed is not known, follow these instructions:
Element diameter (Inches)Diaphragm bag flow (GPM m3/h)410 (2.4)840 (9.0) - If the membranes are extremely fouled and the recirculated cleaning solution becomes dark or cloudy, remove up to 15% of the solution volume. Heavily soiled items may also benefit from a soaking period (up to 8 hours).
- Monitor the pH of the solution during the cleaning process. If the pH remains within the desired range and the solution does not become cloudy, it can be used to clean the following stages. In the unlikely event that the pH decreases, prepare a new mixture and repeat steps 1 to 4.
- Once cleaning is complete, rinse the membranes by passing RO permeate through each pressure vessel. The system is then ready to return to service.
