Description
Coconut shell activated carbon IA-4 for treatment of tequila and other distillates.
IA-4 is an activated carbon that is manufactured from coconut shell and thermally activated in a reducing atmosphere, saturated with water vapor.
IA-4 is the most suitable for retaining volatile substances, since its main application is the retention of odor-causing molecules that evaporate easily.
The volatile substances present in an alcoholic beverage are those that evaporate when the beverage is moved in the container in which the aromas are evaluated.
IA-4 is a high hardness coal, so it is particularly recommended when reactivation is desired.

Certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61.
This gives this coal 3 fundamental qualities:
- The raw material is of vegetable origin, and therefore does not contain metals and other contaminants typically
present in mineral coals; - As it is thermally activated, no chemical compounds are added that could leave residues in the charcoal;
- Coconut shell charcoal has the pore diameter that most efficiently adsorbs low molecular weight organic pollutants
, which are often the most harmful to humans.
Which contaminants present in tequila can be reduced with activated carbon?
Activated carbon is commonly used in tequila production to reduce contaminants in the liquid and improve its quality.
Some of the contaminants that can be reduced in tequila through the use of activated carbon include:
Methanol: Methanol is a toxic alcohol produced during the fermentation and distillation process of tequila. Methanol consumption can cause serious health problems, so it is important to reduce its presence in tequila.
Sulfur compounds: These compounds may be present in tequila due to the use of certain agave varieties, and can give rise to unpleasant flavors and aromas.
Organic acids: These compounds can be produced during the fermentation process and can contribute to a sour taste in tequila.
Impurities: These can include organic and inorganic particles that can affect the flavor and clarity of tequila.
By reducing these contaminants, activated carbon can improve the flavor, aroma, clarity and purity of tequila.
At Carbotecnia we help you improve your tequila to reach the desired taste, smell and color.
