Why does pool or spa water require treatment?

One of the applications of treatment systems and equipment is in the water of swimming pools, pools and spas, because here the use of the resource is for activities of direct contact with the end user, so it is of great importance to take care of the quality of the water used since, otherwise, it can put the users at risk and bring negative effects on the human body, as well as on health. First of all, it must be taken into account that pool water is in constant recirculation, which allows physical and chemical treatment, which is necessary since the water is exposed to the surroundings, the environment and the user himself. Without proper treatment the water can become cloudy and promote the growth of pathogenic microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites with the ability to generate gastrointestinal diseases or skin ailments.

Water pumping

pH adjustment

Adjusting the pH for swimming pools is an important task that you should perform periodically to keep the water clean and safe. The pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of the water, and is expressed on a scale from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. An adequate pH for a pool should be between 7.2 and 7.6, which ensures that chlorine and other disinfectants work properly, that skin and eye irritation to swimmers does not occur, and that corrosion of equipment and surfaces is prevented. If the pH is outside the optimal range, you should adjust it with specific chemicals or through granular media such as calcite and corosex that allow raising the pH value by reducing the acidity of the water, which in turn helps to prevent corrosion.

Ozone disinfection

Ozone is a molecule formed by three oxygen atoms that has the capacity to eliminate microorganisms potentially harmful to health thanks to its oxidizing properties. Ozone is used to disinfect pool water because it offers many advantages over other traditional methods such as chlorine or bromine. Ozone disinfection reduces the need for other disinfectant chemicals, such as chlorine. This reduces the amount of disinfection by-products and minimizes skin and eye irritation, as well as improving air quality in swimming pools and indoor pools. Unlike other chemical disinfectants that leave residues in the water, ozone leaves no chemical by-products. This makes the water safer and more environmentally friendly.

UV disinfection

UV disinfection consists of applying ultraviolet light to water, which eliminates 99.9% of harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, algae and fungi. UV light does not generate by-products as do some chemical disinfectants such as chlorine derivatives. This process prevents microorganisms from reproducing and thus ensures that pool water is safe and free of biological contaminants. Unlike some chemical disinfectants, UV light is not pH sensitive and can effectively disinfect in acidic or alkaline pH conditions.

Chemical dosing pumps

Dosing pumps are used for the controlled injection of disinfectants into the pool water.

The metering pump measures the exact amount of disinfectant and introduces it into the water circulation system, ensuring that a constant level of protection is maintained to eliminate pathogenic microorganisms.

They can also inject chemicals such as muriatic acid or caustic soda to raise or lower the pH as needed.

UV light lamps

UV lamps work by emitting germicidal ultraviolet light at specific wavelengths that damage the DNA of microorganisms, preventing their reproduction and infectious capacity. They are used in water treatment, air purification and surface sterilization systems in medical, industrial and water treatment applications, including swimming pools, pools and drinking water systems. UV disinfection is an environmentally friendly option as it requires no chemicals and produces no toxic by-products.

Corosex

Corosex is a filter media consisting primarily of calcined magnesium (MgO) granules. When acidic water flows through a Corosex bed, the calcined magnesium granules react with hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions in the water, which increases the pH and reduces the acidity.

Corosex is effective in correcting acidity problems and, like calcite, is used to prevent corrosion of pipes and plumbing equipment due to water acidity.

Calcite

Calcite is a mineral composed primarily of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and is commonly used in water treatment to correct acidic or corrosive water problems. Calcite is used to raise the pH of water and neutralize acidity by dissolving calcium carbonate in the water.

As a result of the chemical reaction, the water becomes less acidic and more alkaline. Calcite acts as a neutralizing agent, helping to prevent corrosion of pipes and plumbing equipment due to the acidity of the water.

On-site chlorine generators

Chlorine generators are systems used in swimming pools and spas to produce chlorine on site through a process of electrolysis.

The process involves the decomposition of common salt (sodium chloride) dissolved in water into its basic components, chlorine (Cl2) and sodium (Na), which act as disinfecting agents.

When a direct electric current is applied to the electrolytic cell, the sodium chloride dissolved in the water decomposes. Electrolysis separates the sodium and chlorine from the chloride ion in the water.

On-site ozone generators

In a water treatment plant, ozone is generated from oxygen in the air by means of an electric current. This device uses electricity to split oxygen molecules (O2) into individual oxygen atoms, which are then recombined into ozone molecules (O3).

Ozone acts as a water disinfection agent by destroying microorganisms and organic compounds present in water. Its disinfectant action is based on its ability to oxidize and degrade substances that may be harmful to human health.
