About water hardness: Water hardness is almost entirely due to calcium and magnesium ions. Other di and trivalent metals have a similar effect, but they are usually not present in high enough concentrations in drinking water to cause problems. The harshness increased the consumption of soap in the laundries and the incrustations in boilers and pipes.

Instructions for use

1. Fill the test tube (Cat. No. 438-00) to the edge with the sample.

2. Pour sample into a mixing bottle (Cat. No. 49-06)

3. Add a level scoop (Cat. No. 511-00) of UniVer 3 Hardness Reagent (Cat. No. 231-20)

4. Add Hardness 3 Titrant Solution (Cat. No. 426-32) to the mixing bottle, drop by drop, while stirring circularly. When the color of the sample changes from pink to blue, note the number of drops that have been added.

Note: If the blue color appears with a single drop of titrant, then the total hardness is <1 grain per gallon.

5. Number of drops = Total Hardness of the sample in grains (grains) per gallon as CaCO3.
