There are 2 types of cationic resins on the market: strong acid resins and weak acid resins, below we present the characteristics of each of them:

Strong Acid Cation Resins:

Derived from sulfonic acid groups, these strong acid cation exchangers work at any pH level.

Used for hard water softening applications, as the first deionization column in demineralizers or for mixed beds. It removes cations from the water and requires a large amount of regenerant, usually hydrochloric acid (HCl).

Weak acid cationic resins:

The weak acid cationic resin uses carboxylic groups that give it high chemical efficiency in many applications, especially for the elimination of bicarbonate alkalinity in water treatment and for the treatment of aqueous organic solutions. The main use of this ion exchange resin is the decalcification and softening of water to reduce the ionic charge on the cationic bed. Weak cationic acid resins are increasingly used in special applications, including the treatment of sewage streams in order to reduce environmental pollution, they are not functional at low pH.
