Consulting for installation, backwashing and disinfection of filter media: sand, anthracite, garnet, zeolite, gravel, etc.
In the industry the correct operation of a sediment filter is of vital importance for a good water pretreatment to be effective, and to keep downstream equipment (activated carbon, softener, reverse osmosis) working properly. For that we have some important points in an installation service, backwashing and disinfection of the granular filter media of a filter.
Installation of sand filters:
The installation is carried out as follows
- Suspended solids analysis and amount of water to be treated per minute.
- Dimensioning of equipment and installation area.
- Place a layer of gravel (25 cm thick), which will serve as support material.
- Layer the filtering granular media, sand, anthracite, garnet...
- Piping installation, testing and initial backwashes
- Start-up with initial backwashes
1. Filter media installation
The installation of filter media is a complex process, which must be carried out by specialists. The installation of filter media is accompanied by a number of important factors:
- The filter media must be placed in a suitable location and at the correct level.
- The filter must be installed correctly, otherwise it will not work properly or, worse, the whole filtering system may fail completely!
- An embedded part (usually cylindrical in shape) should be formed in each tank, so that it is possible to install there all kinds of filtering elements: from coarse sand to anthracite or garnet; from stones to zeolite; etc., depending on the type of water to be purified.
2. Filter disinfection
If you have a deep bed filter, you will know that the filter media must be disinfected periodically. This is necessary to prevent the spread of bacteria. The filter media should be disinfected after installation and after each semi-annual or annual maintenance. It can also be done between cleanings if necessary using chlorine, ozone or chlorine dioxide. Disinfection should only be carried out by a professional, as it is not possible for untrained persons to ensure that all areas are treated correctly with sufficient contact time.
3. Correct backwashing for cleaning the water filter.
The filter must be cleaned in a timely manner. The cleaning process consists of two phases:
- The first phase consists of filling the water distribution zone of the filter with water at a certain temperature and pressure. This causes a reduction of the pressure on the surface of the elements, thus facilitating their detachment from the pores and facilitating their removal by suction dredging equipment.
- The second phase is called "backwashing" (or backwashing): it consists of expelling the dirt particles trapped by the reverse flow through the pipes leading to each element during normal operation of the plant's purification systems equipped with automatic backwash valves.
More than 50% of consumers face the problem of clogging of new filter media, or the need for frequent backwashing or a drop in pressure shortly after installation.
We know that most consumers face the problem of clogging of new filter media, or the need for frequent backwashing or a risky pressure drop shortly after installation. The solution to this problem is simple: the filter must be monitored for clogging. It is necessary to perform regular regenerations and backwashes before the filter becomes completely clogged.
